    Like so many Californians, the 6th-grade students at Stevenson School love In-N-Out. They love your company's focus on fresh food but when the Seaside, CA location opened last year, they became concerned about the environmental impact of straws on the nearby Monterey Bay.

    Single use plastic straws are a huge threat to our oceans and wildlife. That’s why the students joined forced with the Last Plastic Straw to start this campaign asking In-N-Out to ditch plastic and switch to compostable straws.

    Campaign Background

    This effort was started by an elementary school class after they learned about the harm plastic causes the ocean, wildlife, and our health.

    Stevenson 6th Graders

    We use and discard over 500,000,000 plastic straws daily in the United States. That's enough straws to fill Yankee Stadium over 9 times a year. Straws are in the top 5 list of litter found on International Coastal Cleanup Day.

    Plastic does not decompose. Instead, it turns into smaller pieces that end up ingested by marine and land animals and into our food supply.

    With over 300 stores in 6 states, In-N-Out can make a big difference by swapping plastic straws for compostable paper straws.

    Join the Stevenson School 6th graders, The Last Plastic Straw, and Plastic Pollution Coalition in pledging to dine at In-N-Out when the plastic straws are replaced. With enough pledges, In-N-Out will see the widespread customer support for this change and act.   • The Last Plastic Straw is a movement to eliminate single-use plastic at the source and a project of Plastic Pollution Coalition.

    The Last Plastic Straw was created as a way to connect the individual in a positive, impactful, and tangible way towards a solution to the plastic pollution problem. By empowering and educating the public and private sectors on plastic pollution, and suggesting a simple act that can have a far-reaching instantaneous effect on our planet.

    In only the past twenty years, people have come to expect plastic straws in every drink, in an example of extreme waste being generated for minimal convenience. These short-lived tools are usually dropped into a garbage can with no further thought, instantly becoming a source of plastic pollution.

    The Last Plastic Straw initiative seeks to activate citizens through a grassroots campaign to encourage individuals to push for change in restaurant protocol and practices in their local communities around the world.

  • The 6th grade class at Stevenson School in Carmel, California has been learning about the environmental impact of plastic pollution.

    As part of Zero Waste Week, the students created their own videos highlighting this issue from their point of view. The students then voted alongside a panel of community judges to see which videos would be featured as part of this campaign.

Through Spendrise, crowds of us can pool our spending together to get a company's attention and change businesses as usual.

A pledge is just that -- you are saying that you’ll buy a gift card at a business IF the business makes the change a campaign requests. You will not be charged until we achieve a campaign victory. We will keep you up to date via email about the campaign process and when you will be charged.

Gift cards are a simple and flexible way to fulfill your pledge to spend at a business. When a campaign succeeds, we load your pledge onto the company's gift card, and then you can use it just like cash when you shop there afterwards. Or make it an actual gift and share it with your friends and family!

Companies listen when customers speak up -- they know that real dollars are on the line. Our platform takes the power of group action to the next level by going beyond anonymous signatures to leverage the awesome power of group spending.

Once we hit the first campaign goal, we will deliver a letter to the headquarters of the business we are targeting, and give them an opportunity to respond. Depending on their response, we will raise the pledge goal to get more people and spending mobilized, and take bolder actions to raise awareness for the issue at hand to further pressure the business. Each business has a tipping point at which they see it’s in their best interest to listen to the demands of the people. Spendrise can help you get there.
